What is a rider?
Do You Want a RIDER Template?
🎧 Good news! You can get your hands on one to fill out yourself in the ONLINE RIDER TEMPLATE. Let’s dive into what a RIDER is and why it matters!
What’s a RIDER Anyway?
Every professional DJ uses a RIDER—a document (usually a PDF) outlining their requirements for gigs. Think of it as your DJ wish list: what gear you need, booth setup, sound specs, and the occasional quirky extras.

For the Rookie DJs…
If you’re just starting out, no need to draft an elaborate RIDER. In fact, it’s often not-done to show up with a list of demands. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Check the gear: Are you spinning with USBs? Confirm the DJ booth has a USB-compatible panel.
- Space matters: Ask if there’s room for your own equipment, like a laptop, and make sure there are enough power outlets.
- Pack smart: Wondering what essentials to bring? Check this list here.
Pro tip: Start simple, stay humble, and save the diva moments for later!
For the Pros…
Once you’re slaying gigs and in a position to demand (yes, demand) certain things, it’s time to craft your RIDER like a pro.
A RIDER typically has two parts:
- Technical RIDER
- Hospitality RIDER
1. Technical RIDER
This is the nitty-gritty of what you need to perform:
- Equipment: Most DJs ask for two, three, or four Pioneer CDJ-2000 NXS2s, linked and hooked up to a DJM-900 NXS2 or a Xone 92.
- Microphones: A Shure SM58 is a common request.
- Sound Levels: Some artists won’t perform unless the venue can produce at least 100 dB of sound pressure. #NoPressure
Oh, and let’s not forget the lighting and video requirements. EDM icons like Deadmau5 even specify the placement of lights and video effects, sometimes bringing their own setup. Because why not?
2. Hospitality RIDER
This is the fun part. Your hospitality RIDER covers all the backstage perks:
- Drinks: Water bottles, soft drinks, and occasionally, something a little stronger.
- Food: A full meal isn’t uncommon—for the DJ and sometimes the entire entourage.
- Extras: Towels, gum, or anything else to keep the vibes fresh.
Did you know? Steve Aoki asks for fresh T-shirts, underwear, and socks. Yep, socks. Stay cozy, folks.
